SF Drug Users' Union:
Street Posters for Upcoming Events

Along the start of the Valencia Street corridor near McCoppin and Duboce, posters promoting meetings, rallies and a movie night organized by the San Francisco Drug Users' Union went up on utility poles yesterday and it's a good area for them. The lime green paper sure catches the eye.

There are three medical marijuana dispensaries in the nearby area; Ketama, Mr. Nice Guy and Caesar's Cafe, not to mention the popular Zeitgeist bar that attracts a large crowd made up of folks very likely to qualify for this special union.

But the posters are not the only tool used by union organizers to recruit new members or folks who just want to check out their activities. They also have a sharply designed blog, full of details about their upcoming events including these two items:

Tuesday, May 17th, 6pm, SF AIDS Foundation, 1035 Market Street, Suite 400: Movie Night with the Speed Project! Showing: Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas ...

June 17th is the 40th anniversary of the day Nixon declared a War on Drugs, and the Drug Users' Union along with other organizations nation-wide are planning a day of action to reflect, mourn, and imagine alternative futures!

I am not a member of this union, but I support many of their efforts, especially in demanding an end to the country's war on people who use drugs, putting better public policies in place that don't involve expensive and generally useless prison sentences and empowering users.

My curiosity is piqued with the news that an action for June 17th is planned for in San Francisco, reminding everyone of the history of the country's losing and costly - both in terms of lives and dollars - war on drugs and users.

Here's a pic of one flyer on display at Valencia and Duboce Streets:
